The object of this text, on the occasion of the celebrations of the bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil, is centered on the affirmation of authors such as Joaquim Nabuco, Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, Teófilo Ottoni, among others, according to which the abdication of Emperor D. Pedro I , in 1831, after nine years and seven months of tumultuous reign, constituted the complementary and final act of the long and gradual process of separation of Brazil from Portugal.
