This article discusses the main aspects of the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS) and the National Solid Waste Plan (Planares), the effects of programmed and psychological obsolescence on the citizen and the environment, and paths towards sustainable development. The methodology of Prodanov and Freitas (2013) was followed, dealing with basic, exploratory, qualitative and bibliographic research. The study concluded that the PNRS and Planares are important legislation to control pollution and preserve the environment, force companies to review their production methods and create an obligation to adopt measures to protect and restore the ecosystem. Obsolescence is inherent to products, but the concern is about the systematic reduction of the useful life time, bringing damages to the consumer, consumerism, the increase in the extraction of natural resources for production and the increase of residues and rejects, compromising the sustainability of the planet.
