Quality of life among people living with HIV: social representations in the context of the interiorization of the epidemic

Abstract

Introduction: The decrease in HIV mortality brought to the fore issues related to the quality of life of the group living with the disease. Objective: The present study aims to analyze and compare the social representations of the quality of life of people living with HIV and their configuration in different municipalities. Materials and methods: Study supported by the Theory of Social Representations, with 384 people living with HIV, in three municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The data were collected by free evocation of the inductive term “quality of life”, later submitted to prototypical analysis with comparison of the central cores. Results: The representation of quality of life is defined by the dimensions: positive and negative affective-attitudinal; conceptual physical and clinical-biomedical. The contrasting elements point to the dimensions of naturalization of life, work, and interpersonal relationships. The comparison of the central cores of the municipalities revealed that the physical and clinical-biomedical conceptual dimensions are shared by the three groups. Conclusion: It is concluded that this is the same social representation for the three groups, with content that is differently activated according to the socio-cultural-historical context.
