Malignant tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath in a rabbit: case report

Introduction: The occurrence of malignant tumors of the peripheral nerve sheath (NPMT), also known as malignant schawannoma, in rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) is little described in the literature, despite this, we have some reports in other animal species such as dogs, cattle and equines. Objective: The objective of this work is to report a clinical case of a malignant tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath in a rabbit (Orytolagus cuniculus), addressing the clinical symptoms, results of tests and procedures performed during the patient's treatment. Case report: In this case report, a nine-year-old lionhead rabbit was seen at a veterinary clinic with a nodule lateral to the left forelimb. The patient underwent physical and laboratory examinations, such as blood count and aspiration cytology, in order to assess his general condition and diagnose the cellular nature of the nodule. After manipulation of the nodule for the collection of exams, the lesion presented a rapid evolution and grew to approximately 10 cm in diameter. The result of the aspiration cytology of the nodule suggested neoplasia of cells of mesenchymal origin. Given this result and the rapid growth of the nodule, the patient underwent surgery to amputate the affected limb, which was referred for histopathological analysis. The analysis result confirmed the suspicion of a malignant schwannoma. Conclusion: The present study served as an alert for the need for further studies involving this type of sarcoma, assessing incidence, new possibilities for treatment and possible prophylaxis.
