Abstract

Introduction. COVID-19 is a contagious infectious disease of great magnitude for public health in the world, since it has generated a collapse of the health system in several countries. Objective. The objective of the study is to analyze the number of hospitalizations, cases, deaths and the vaccination coverage rate for COVID-19 in Brazil, in the state of Rio de Janeiro and in the municipality of Valença-RJ. Material and methods. This is a retrospective, descriptive study, with quantitative analysis, using data obtained through national database systems from February 2020 to July 2022. Results and discussion. At the end of the data collection period the vaccination rate in Brazil was 84.1% with the first dose, 79.1% with the complete vaccination schedule, 47.2% with the booster dose, and a total of 678,514 deaths were reported. In the state of Rio de Janeiro, 79.1% with the first dose, 73.7% with the complete vaccination schedule, 39.9% with the booster dose and 74,766 deaths from COVID-19 and 187,959 SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) hospitalizations due to COVID-19. In Valença-RJ, 83.3% with the first dose, 80.8% with the complete vaccination schedule, 50.9% with a booster dose and 240 deaths from COVID-19 and 1,022 SARS hospitalizations due to COVID-19. Conclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic was overwhelming not only in the biomedical and epidemiological order, but also generating socioeconomic, cultural, political and historical impacts. Control of mortality and hospitalization was due to good vaccination coverage. It is worth emphasizing the importance of maintaining vaccination.
