Notification errors and underreporting of Covid-19 cases: Integrative review

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or Covid-19 is a disease that has a high rate of contamination among humans. In Brazil, Covid-19 infected more than 36 million people and killed more than 680,000 people. However, underreporting of Covid-19 cases and the accumulation of notifications made these data questionable. Objective: To evaluate this study was to investigate notifications of Covid-19 cases in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Data from the Ministry of Health were used; Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS); Health Information (TabNet); Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and State Department of Health of Rio de Janeiro. Materials and methods: The parameters analyzed were: number of confirmed cases by race; confirmed cases by age group; confirmed cases by municipality; deaths confirmed by test; confirmed deaths by municipality and confirmed deaths by sex and race. Results: Regarding the data, only 75,316 cases of the 2,503,195 confirmed cases were able to identify the origin of the notification, which is equivalent to 97% of the sample and 35,132 cases of deaths were completely ignored in the notification form. Conclusion: The incorrect filling of Covid-19 data in the State of Rio de Janeiro directly influences the design of the public health strategy that could be implemented. Errors in notifications made by health professionals and municipal health departments make it impossible to understand the impact of this disease on Rio de Janeiro society.
