Abstract

ABSTRACT: Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant disease of plasma cells that affects the bone marrow. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, which involves chemotherapy, radiotherapy and bone marrow transplantation (BMT), are essential for a good prognosis. The oral manifestations of MM include pain, swelling and lesions, and the role of the dental surgeon (DS) is essential at all stages of treatment. Case Report: The 69-year-old male patient initially sought medical attention due to pain in the lumbar region and was diagnosed with a herniated disc. After complementary examinations, he was diagnosed with MM and began treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. During the dental assessment to receive a report for the BMT, the DS identified procedures that needed to be carried out, but which

were not possible due to the patient's age limit for the transplant and the use of Zometa®. Discussion: The DS's participation is crucial to avoid oral complications during cancer treatment. The absence of adequate dental care can cause serious complications such as osteonecrosis after tooth extraction, especially when bisphosphonates such as Zometa® are used. Collaboration between doctors and dentists is essential to ensure the patient's overall health. Conclusion: The DS's intervention in the treatment of MM is indispensable at all stages, prevents complications and improves the patient's quality of life. Cooperation between health professionals and awareness of dental care are essential to optimize treatment results.
