Abstract

Introduction: salivary mucocele is a condition that is characterized by the accumulation of saliva in adjacent tissues due to the rupture of salivary glands or ducts. This condition can cause discomfort, compromise the animal's quality of life and, in more severe cases, lead to secondary infections. Objective: The objective of this study is to report the case of a dog diagnosed with salivary mucocele of the left mandibular gland. Case report: an 8-year-old SRD (mixed breed) bitch was treated at the Veterinary Polyclinic in Valença/RJ. The animal had an increase in fluctuating volume in the left submandibular region. She was diagnosed with salivary mucocele and underwent a drainage procedure, which temporarily resolved the fluid accumulation. In the following two years, the situation was repeated several times. After 2 years, in view of the persistence of the condition, sialoadenectomy was indicated to remove the affected salivary gland. Lymphadenectomy of the left submandibular lymph node was also performed. The removed glands and lymph node were sent for histopathological examination, which did not identify malignant characteristics in the samples. During the healing period, there was a development of a seroma in the wound area, which required drainage. After this procedure, healing proceeded satisfactorily. After 12 days of surgery, the dog returned to have the stitches removed. Conclusion: the treatment of salivary mucocele in dogs by means of sialoadenectomy is effective in preventing recurrences. The surgical technique, accompanied by adequate anesthesia and rigorous postoperative care, is essential for the success of the procedure.
