Synthesis of current evidence on the use of Blue Covarine in dental toothpastes: an Integrative literature review

Abstract

The optical effect of Blue Covarine pigmentation in toothpastes has the ability to whiten, characterizing apparent results of color change, in addition to containing an abrasive system in its formula. Purpose: Synthesize current evidence on the use of Blue Covarine in dental toothpastes. Methods: This is a literature review whose database search took place during the month of April 2024. Scientific findings were searched online in the virtual databases of: PubMed, BVS and LILACS. The search strategy involved combining the following descriptors: LILACS: (blue covarine) AND (dentifrice), and in PUBMED: (blue covarine) AND (dentifrice). Results and Discussion: Five articles were identified in the LILACS database and six in PubMed, with most being in vitro studies, along with one clinical study, one literature review, and one cost-effectiveness analysis. The results indicated that Blue Covarine provides an immediate whitening effect due to the formation of an optical film on the enamel, although temporary. Studies also showed lower abrasiveness compared to toothpastes containing activated charcoal or hydrogen peroxide, better preserving the integrity of composite resins. Additionally, its application after conventional bleaching procedures was shown to help maintain tooth color. However, cost-effectiveness analyses suggest that continuous use may reduce its economic viability compared to traditional bleaching treatments. Conclusion: Toothpastes with Blue Covarine are effective in extrinsic actions, even with a lower production of abrasives than toothpastes with activated carbon or hydrogen peroxide, suggesting aesthetic results with luminous tooth colors after tooth whitening treatment compared to toothpastes that do not have a whitening agent.
