Abstract

Introduction: Fetal malformations or also called birth defects are changes that are considered abnormalities that occur in the structures and / or functions of a tissue, organ or system during embryonic development, manifesting at the birth of the animal. The cheiloschise is a malformation that develops with incomplete development of the lips, leaving an open vertical line in the nasolabial juice and that occurs due to the failure in the junction of the maxillary process with the medial nasal process, which can be unilateral or bilateral, and even associated with palatoschis, another malformation that affects the oral cavity and characterized by a cleft in the region of the palates commonly known as cleft palate. Objective - To report the occurrence of a calf with unilateral cheiloschis associated with bilateral palatoschis treated at a property in the municipality of Valença / RJ. Discussion - Although cheiloschis can be readily diagnosed through morphological changes soon after birth, its causes are not easily detectable. In the present case, bilateral cheiloschisis was the result of failures in the fusion of the maxillary process and the medial nasal process or its surroundings. Conclusion - The incidence of cheiloschis and palatoschis causes economic damage to livestock and affected cattle. It is necessary to identify the etiology to avoid new cases.
