Objective: In the present study we sought to understand the current pandemic context and its relationship with depression cases in the academic community and general population of the American continent, in addition to promote awareness on the subject. Method: The research carried out was based on the exploration of databases (PubMed, Scielo, American Psychological Association and Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations) in which articles about the correlation between depression and the Covid-19 pandemic were analyzed. Results: Were selected works that corresponded to the theme of depression in students during the Covid-19 pandemic in America, as well as studies of its parallel in the general population of these countries. Conclusion: A major impact of Covid-19 on depression rates among students and the general population was noted, especially in women and vulnerable groups. In view of the results there is a shortage of academic papers on the subject, requiring further research to broaden the debate
