Introduction: Despite progress in genetic selection, bovine fertility is still unsatisfactory. This article examines how factors such as the mother's age, milk production, health, nutrition and gestational environment can permanently impact the fetus, influencing its growth, morphology and future fertility. Objective: To carry out an integrative review of the literature to identify and analyze the effects of fetal programming on the productive and reproductive efficiency of cattle in the progeny. Materials and methods: Original articles, systematic reviews and meta-analyses published in recognized scientific journals, written in Portuguese, Spanish, English, French and Russian that were within the research proposal were included. Studies in duplicates of the databases, financed by pharmaceutical and philanthropic industries and cross-sectional qualitative studies were excluded, in addition to the relevance of the published journal. Results and discussion: Fetal programming is influenced by variations in nutrient levels during the peripuerperal phase, affecting the development of the progeny. These effects can have long-term implications for the reproductive and productive efficiency of subsequent generations of animals. Conclusion: Studies on fetal programming are recent and appear to be promising, although they still present contradictory and scattered results, which makes understanding and correlation with progeny productivity difficult. It is imperative to conduct additional research into the effects of restriction and supplementation in the F2 and F3 generations to assess long-term impacts on progeny.
