Introduction: This study investigates the perception of nurses in leadership positions in a teaching hospital in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro state regarding their managerial praxis. Objective: To analyze the perception of nurses in leadership positions in a teaching hospital located in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro state regarding their managerial praxis. Methodology: This is an exploratory, descriptive, and qualitative field study, with content analysis according to Minayo. Data were collected through interviews conducted using a semi-structured form with open-ended questions with 30 college-level nurses and subsequently analyzed to identify emerging themes. This study seeks to contribute to strengthening nursing leadership, which is essential for the efficiency and quality of health services. Results: The study was conducted with 30 participants in a teaching hospital located in the southern region of Rio de Janeiro state, and it was possible to note that most of the interviewees feel that they have adequate support to perform their managerial functions. Based on the analysis of the interviews, it was possible to consolidate four categories that represent fundamental elements for understanding the trajectory of these leaders. The categories formulated in this research were: Professional Trajectory and Academic Preparation: From Training to Practice; Challenges and Demands of Leadership in Nursing: Management and Adaptation to the Work Environment; Communication and Interpersonal Skills as Essential Management Tools; Perspectives for Improvement for Strengthening Leadership in Nursing. Conclusion: The participants' statements indicate an evolution in the demands on the Nursing professional, with a growing appreciation of a flexible and horizontal leadership style. Therefore, the results of this research suggest that strengthening leadership in Nursing requires an institutional commitment to the development of skills that integrate management, communication and patient-centered care.
